What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

A dazzling smile can be the key to confidence, but if you’re not entirely happy with the appearance of your teeth, bite or gums, don’t worry! There are plenty of ways your dentist can improve the look, and sometimes the feel, of your smile. These procedures are examples of cosmetic dentistry, and we’ve included five of the most popular types below. They have the potential to change your outlook and your life.

Whitening
People have looked for ways to whiten their teeth since the dawn of history — for instance, the ancient Romans believed that goat’s milk was the key to radiant teeth. These days, your dentist offers ways to whiten that do not require a trip to the local dairy farm, including bleaching trays, pens, gels and even laser bleaching. Some simply restore teeth to their natural colour, while others can make them even whiter. Consult your dentist to determine which whitening technique is best for you.

Veneers
These thin porcelain or resin laminates bond directly to your teeth, and are custom-made for each individual. Some popular applications for veneers are closing gaps between teeth and covering discoloured teeth that won’t respond to other whitening techniques.

Crowns
Often made from metal, porcelain or a combination of the two, a crown encircles and caps an unhealthy tooth, increasing its strength and improving its appearance. If a cavity has damaged one of your teeth, leaving an unsightly discolouration, a crown help prevent further damage to the tooth while restoring your smile. They are especially useful for patients for whom veneers are not an option.

Bonding
In this procedure, a dental resin similar to your natural enamel is applied to your teeth, covering the problematic area. Your dentist will carefully sculpt the resin to each tooth, then bond it using a blue light. The result of this bonding is a resilient, natural-looking smile.

Tooth Contouring
This technique removes sections of your teeth’s enamel, sculpting it into a shape that’s more aesthetically pleasing. If you have visible chips, or want to change the shape, length or positioning of your teeth, tooth contouring may help you achieve a straighter, more consistent smile.

So when it comes to brightening or straightening your teeth, you have options.
